In recent years, there has been a trend in the industry to package several chips together to improve integration and reduce the area of the final solution. The lithium battery protection market is no exception. The two lithium battery protection schemes A and B in Figure 3 seem to integrate the two chips in Figure 2 into one chip, but in fact, the internal controller IC and switch tube chip in the package are still separated from different sources. Of manufacturers, the solution is only to seal the two together, commonly known as "two cores in one".
Since the two internal chips are actually from different manufacturers, the shapes are not well matched, resulting in different final package shapes, and in many cases, general-purpose packages cannot be used. This kind of package is relatively large and cannot save peripheral components, so this "two-core-in-one" solution does not actually save much space. In terms of cost, although the cost of two packages is reduced to the cost of one package, because this package is usually relatively large, some are not general-purpose packages, and some need to use a chip-stacked package in order to reduce the package size. Therefore, it is different from the traditional package. Compared with the two chip solutions, the cost advantage is not obvious.
Although the above "two-core in one" solution and single-chip positive electrode protection solution bring certain advantages to users in terms of solution area and cost, the advantages are still not obvious. These programs also bring some drawbacks. Therefore, in the process of competing with mature traditional programs for customers, in the end, they can only fight a price war by reducing gross profit. Since the true original cost of these solutions does not have obvious advantages, with the price reduction of the control IC and switch tube chips of the traditional solutions, these "two-core-in-one" solutions or positive electrode protection solutions have not been able to shake the market dominance of the traditional solutions. status.
In recent years, many newly created switch tube chip manufacturers have appeared on the market. In order to reduce the cost, the original gold wire was changed to copper wire during packaging, and the switch tube does not have ESD protection. Although these products have a certain difference in performance compared with brand switching tubes, they quickly seized the secondary market because of their cost advantages. This is also the reason why traditional solutions are in competition with the "two-core-in-one" and positive-electrode protection solutions in the market. Winning made a huge contribution.
